In addition to the normal patrol (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) and investigative functions, the Department also operates other programs such as the in-school program D.A.R.E., Neighborhood Watch, Safe Spot, Bicycle Safety and other drug and alcohol related programs are offered for pre-school through high school children. The Department hosted a Crime College for senior citizens and routinely visits senior locations to give safety tips and distribute literature.
Thanks to a COPS grant, the Department has recently received a complete upgrade of its computer system. They are now able to access national information, including the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). The CPD is in the process of installing laptop computers in each police cruiser: currently, these may be used to issue citations or make accident reports, but when the system is fully operational, officers will be able to check the NCIC database, verify registrations and driver's licenses, and more- all on-the-spot, from the cruiser.
